Turning Trials into Triumph: Mamie’s Journey

Mamie* is a nine-year-old girl who has known more hardship in her short life than most could bear.

After becoming seriously ill, paralized and unable to speak at a young age, her parents sought help from the community leaders. Instead of help and healing, the leader made a heart-wrenching accusation: he blamed Mamie’s grandmother for her illness, claiming that she had fed her a food had caused Mamie’s condition. This harsh accusation splintered the family, sending ripples of anger and distrust throughout it.

Amid the confusion and fear, Mamie’s grandmother made a desperate decision to flee with Mamie in search of a cure. When Mamie’s father realized she was gone he reported her disappearance to the police.

The police summoned the grandmother to the station. It was here that Mamie, at just six years old, was caught in a battle between family. The Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs became involved, and Mamie was placed at a temporary refuge while the family drama unfolded.

When she finally returned home to her mother, the joy of reunion was short-lived. Her mother passed away not long after and left Mamie in the care of her father.  Tragically,  just a year later, he succumbed to cerebral malaria. The family, already steeped in superstition, believed his death was the result of Mamie’s mother’s vengeful spirit.

At her father’s funeral,  Mamie’s maternal family was banned from attending. They were forbidden from even seeing Mamie, to comfort her in her time of mourning.

Mamie begged her grandmother to take her home, and rescue her from her paternal relatives. They ultimately had her grandmother arrested for kidnapping Mamie.

Although the grandmother was released, the situation had escalated so far that the Ministry intervened once again, taking Mamie away from all family for her safety.

A compassionate social worker was the only steady presence in Mamie’s life.  The social worker placed her in our Interim Care Center (ICC) while working with the fractured family to determine who could offer Mamie the love and protection she desperately needed.

In our care, Mamie finally found a place where love, support, and kindness wrapped around her. She was allowed to simply be a child. Surrounded by people who truly cared for her, she was no longer just a victim of her circumstances—she was a little girl again.

On August 16, 2024, the social worker determined a custody schedule that will allow her to see both sides of her family. She has been reunified with her grandmother and stays with her during the school year, while spending the weekends and holidays with her paternal family.

Mamie will remain under the umbrella of Princess Promise

enabling the family to food and hygiene products. Her school fees are covered by Princess Promise to allow her to continue learning and growing in her education. Mamie also received her own pink Bible so she can continue to read about the love her Heavenly Father has for her.

We praise God for His provision and tender love towards His children. We thank Him for allowing Princess Promise to be a part of her story.

YOU are the reason a new chapter is being written for Mamie and her family.

Now through the end of the year, every dollar donated will be doubled. These funds will go directly to the effort of intervening for more girls, just like Mamie, in 2025!
